3 Ways to Grow Your Network Marketing Business Using The Internet

If you have been in Network Marketing for a while, you are probably used to being encouraged to use certain strategies to grow your Network Marketing business. 

  • Call your friends up and arrange home parties..
  • Talk to your family at get togethers..
  • Make your list of 100 and reach out to them..
  • Get down to coffee shops with your laptop and start chatting to strangers about what you do..

Any of this sound familiar??

The interesting thing is..

Network Marketing is an industry which is changing.

Recruiting team members has traditionally been done a certain way. Face to face, belly to belly..

Once upon a time it would have been unheard of to recruit someone that you hadn't actually met in person.

But there is something which is challenging that belief, and suggesting that this might not actually be the case.

That thing is the 'internet'!

Industry Leaders in Network Marketing Concede That “Internet Recruiting Works!”

Leaders in network marketing, who have earned tens of millions of dollars, have finally conceded that using “Internet marketing & recruiting can work!”

It can be one of the most effective network marketing strategies!

Now, we are not just talking about prospecting via social media, but marketing as well.

‘Internet marketing’ means using online branding strategies, advertising, Facebook fan pages, video blogging, email blasts, etc.

It always amazed us that many leaders had this belief that Internet recruiting strategies were a “distraction,” given the fact that many of top earners have gone on to build their online brands using… well… Internet marketing!

Specifically, a type of Internet marketing we call “attraction marketing,” which focuses on building a loyal following online and creating a trusted brand where people will literally buy anything you recommend, because they know, like and trust you.

We have heard of many people build successful network marketing businesses using the Internet, but since the majority of the industry still doesn't believe in these network marketing strategies, most leaders maintain the belief that it can’t be done and refer to it as a “distraction.”

Therefore, we think it is essential that we share with you our top 3 Internet strategies that are actually used to build network marketing businesses today!

Strategy #1: Social Media Prospecting

This strategy is an approach which will seem pretty familiar, because it’s prospecting as we’ve always done it, just with an online twist.

Now prospecting on social media is NOT “Internet marketing,” however it still beats camping out at Starbucks 🙂

This is the process that we have researched and tested.

1) SEARCH – Use Facebook Search to find ‘friends of friends’ who live locally (at least to start with).

There are a few reasons for doing it this way…

First of all, Facebook allows you to directly message ‘friends of friends’ so that your message goes into their main inbox, instead of the “Other” inbox, which most people don’t even know exists. (We didn’t know either, prior to researching this).

Secondly, you start with local, because it will allow you to eventually meet face to face with them to form a more powerful personal connection. Given that you have no prior relationship, it’s important to meet.

2) QUALIFY – Next, you take a minute to look at their profile and identify key interests that might resonate with you personally, your business or your products. You are also looking for more subtle things, like are they smiling in their pictures? Are they outgoing? Do they seem to be a positive person?

Bear in mind, you are prospecting, but you are also qualifying them.

For example, an interest in Robert Kiyosaki might indicate an interest in entrepreneurship or diversified income streams. An interest in CrossFit indicates an interest in health and wellness and that might resonate with your company’s products.

3) MESSAGE – Then you craft your first message to them, which believe it or not, follows a somewhat standard prospecting approach.

You can come up with a template, but each message will be tailored to them specifically. This message will mention friends you have in common. You mention that you’re a recruiter for a “health & wellness company” or whatever the niche is, you’re “expanding in the area” and you ask if they are “open to earning extra money?”

You DO NOT want to be posting copy/paste messages with links to sign up for your opportunity. Not only is that not effective, it’s considered SPAM by Facebook and can get your account shut down and get your company in trouble too.

In this initial message, you aren’t giving them any info or links. You are simply trying to get them to express an interest.

4) BOOK – If they “swing back,” book a face to face meeting, if local or at the very least get them on the phone. You just let them know that details are better explained in person and, “if we were to work together, it’s a good opportunity to see if we would like each other! ;-)”

At this point, if they meet with you, hopefully your company or upline have defined a solid process for you to follow here.

If they don’t answer back, there are some different approaches here. Some play it safe and leave the 70% that didn’t answer back, alone.

You could follow up with a 2nd message 4-5 days later, if they don’t answer back. A short message simply to see if they a) received the 1st message and b) to see if they are interested. Sometimes they don’t get the first message or see the message when they are in the middle of something and forget to answer back.

Sending a 3rd follow-up message is not recommended. At this point, you assume a “NO” and move on.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg…

On top of this, there are some really powerful and high leveraged online prospecting & network marketing strategies, which you can learn more about here.

Strategy #2: The ‘Mouse Trap’ Method

This process is pretty simple and depending on your personality, may or may not be great for you. This pretty much involves posting your results on social media (i.e. setting the ‘mouse trap’) and waiting for people to express an interest via the comments or private message. (i.e SNAP!!!)

Additionally, to boost results, you can add a CALL TO ACTION to message you, if they want more info.

From a ‘leading with the opportunity’ angle, this would involve posting pictures and announcements about your ‘rags to riches’ story, income results, and the impact it’s made on your lifestyle. (Obviously, you can only do this if you’ve gotten results.)

We have seen people deploy this strategy with great success, but we are very wary of this approach and we could see you running into compliance or even legal problems, if lots of people in your company are doing this. We personally don’t like this angle because it can piss off your real life friends & family, but we know it can work well too, because let’s face it, most people have a desire for more income.

Alternatively, with a ‘leading with the product’ angle, the mouse trap approach could be very powerful and usually more friend & company safe, especially if the results you are posting has to do with a personal or customer case study. This angle will help you generate more customers and a few of those customers may express an interest in the business, after they fall in love with the product.

We’ve seen this angle run rampant with weight loss challenges & case studies, which still work amazingly well, but can also work with other products, if there is a clear and visible result that was produced from product use.

For example, we've seen people in travel businesses, post pictures of their luxury vacation/trips and reveal how little they paid for that experience.

Or you can post pictures of yourself running a marathon, triathlon, or whatever, which would not have been possible without certain supplements.

Essentially, show everyone connected to you on social media a desirable change in your life, achieved in part or as a direct result of your product.

Once they express an interest, you follow whatever process you’ve been taught for closing people.

For closing offline after using strategy #1 or #2 for getting the prospect, we would recommend training by Tim Sales on presenting, closing, and enrolling new reps.

But if “closing” people is not your thing, then there’s our favorite Internet strategy, which we have employed in our business to great success and which has also created other opportunities for us (coaching & consulting)…

Strategy #3: ‘Attraction Marketing’

Attraction marketing has now become the most recognized strategy for 6 and 7 figure network marketing earners. 

These earners - 'the network marketing elite' - aren't really that dissimilar to us. They have been in network marketing for a similar amount of time, they have similar uplines, they get the same strategies suggested to them..

But for some reason their businesses have just exploded. Most of us would naturally think, that they must work 15 hour days to create that level of success.

But the thing is. They haven't.

These folks don't message strangers online templated messages like in Strategy #1.

They don't fill their friend’s News Feeds with promotions for an opportunity or product as in Strategy #2.

They have created a truly passive way of making sure that when they woke up each morning..

They have an inbox full of notifications, letting them know that there are 10, 20, 50, or even hundreds of new prospects, interested in learning more about their opportunity or product or mentorship.

Or they have an inbox full of notifications of 5 – 10 new CUSTOMERS waiting to receive their product and excited about the possibility it holds for them.

How do they do it?

They use a process we call 'Attraction Marketing' (here is a 10 lesson recruitment bootcamp)

Attraction marketing is all about leading with value, giving before you take, illustrating to your target audience that you are a desirable person to do business with.

You see, just about every other type of business in the world is now using proven network marketing strategies, passive and scalable online marketing & advertising methods in ADDITION to prospecting and referral based methods.

So why NOT your network marketing or direct sales business? The only reason would be if it wasn’t a REAL business. But we know better.

Just like anything else in business, this will take work and study.

3 Key Steps When Building Your Home Business Online

If you’re tired of bugging friends and family, doing home meetings or prospecting pretty much everyone you meet..

Then you’re probably ready to build your network marketing business online.

Six months into our network marketing business, we had recruited 2 people into our business and ALL of them had quit!

We had held home meetings at our house, friend’s houses, stranger’s houses, attended company events, regional events and after thousands of miles driven and $5,000 in the hole, we were pretty much ready to quit!

To be honest, it was embarrassing and we felt ashamed..

The absolute LAST THING we wanted to her was the “I told you so” from anyone, so we took a leap of faith and started searching the internet for answers!

By the grace of God and maybe a little luck, we found the website of someone that had built their network marketing empire almost completely online and thus began our journey into Online Network Marketing.

We were saved!

Long story short, after 10 months and $1000s in income later, we are so grateful for the online mentors that have helped us, because they literally saved our life!

And today, as our mentors did with us, we devote much of our time today showing others how they can take their network marketing business online and let go of everything they currently don’t like about building the 'old school way'.

Now, if you want to build your network marketing business online, here’s what you need to know…

First of all, the benefits of doing this are HUGE!

  • You can generate fresh, qualified leads from wherever (and whenever) you please.
  • You can end REJECTION and only talk to people that you know are interested in your opportunity (and your products).
  • You don’t need to waste time and money travelling to recruit people. It can be done in the comfort of your home with a laptop and a phone.
  • Every action you do reaches a huge audience. This means you can take masses of people from a cold market to a warm market all in one go.

And don't worry, these techniques are available to everyone! You don't need to be a tech wizard or be able to build websites (or any of that stuff!).

You just need to follow 3 simple steps to get your business online, and be open to attracting the right prospects to your business through the power of the internet!

Here are the 3 steps we followed to get our network marketing business online…..

So what do we mean by mindset?

Well, this is all about being open to learn and try something new to help move your business forward.

You need to be comfortable learning a whole new skill set, and to be OK with the fact that it is going to take a bit of time to master.

Everyone has different attitudes towards personal development and learning new skills, but let’s look at a practical example to put this into context.

When you start a new job, what do you do?

Every job is different and it takes time to learn new systems, get to know your colleagues and how they work, and to learn the new skills you need for that particular role.

It takes time and patience (from you and the company you work for!) for you to start producing your best results.

Putting your network marketing business online follows the same process.

You need to be comfortable being uncomfortable - if that makes any sense!

You need to be OK with going into the unknown and that you are not going to learn everything at once and instantly make this a success.

It will take time, but with perseverance you will get there. Just focus on what’s in front of you.

Master that, implement it, and then move on.

And always remind yourself of why you are doing this in the first place, you want to grow your home business and make it successful.

And that does take work and sometimes a new perspective on things.

Be prepared for resistance.

There may be people that won’t approve of you doing something that’s different from what they recommend within the company.

This includes your upline, crossline and even your downline.

This is something we have experienced a little bit, with the odd comment of:

‘A lot of people have tried to recruit people a different way to what is recommended, and they have all failed’.

It’s important not to take these comments to heart, part of the process is having a thick skin!

It's natural for people to fear what they don't know, especially if they built their business a different way.

Building a business online is completely different than building it offline.

It requires a different way of working and an entirely different skill set.

The honest truth is that they just don’t understand it, which is why you shouldn’t give in to their doubt and fear.

More and more network marketers are using internet marketing and social media to grow their business and the proof is all around us.

If you are not starting to build your business online, you are getting left behind.

Move forward no matter what others say to you and then follow a….

There are a couple of ways you can do this:


  • Try and work it out all yourself through trial and error

  • Follow a proven system / blueprint


We chose the later and joined a community which provided all the training we needed to get ourselves online and generating leads.


The primary way you can build your business online is through social media.


The first way of using social media (Facebook in this example) is by using the same process of recruiting and prospecting online as you do offline.


All you need for this is a personal Facebook account and a process - maybe provided by your upline or somebody in your company—on how to present your opportunity and convert prospects into either buyers or new reps.


This can provide good results and you are saved the hassle of travelling to meet people, doing home parties etc. as all you need is a laptop and an internet connection.


This is how we started using Facebook to take our business online, but the issue was that it consumed so much of our time as we were constantly:


  • Engaging with people

  • Approaching people

  • Having multiple chats on instant messenger (at different stages)

  • Posting content to our page


Using Facebook in this way was certainly a step in the right direction away from the traditional prospecting tactics we mentioned earlier, it just didn’t produce the leverage we wanted to free up our time.


The alternative way you can use Facebook to grow your business is through passive social media recruitment.

This is the technique we use and what we learnt from that FREE Online Recruitment Course we mentioned earlier.

For this strategy you need a:

  • Facebook Business Page (which is also called a “fan page”)
  • Facebook advertising account for advertising on Facebook
  • Lead funnel (using a blog)

The idea here is that people reach out to you by visiting your fan page (which you post valuable content on), are motivated to then go to your website, where they will submit their information in exchange for something valuable you promise to send them.

This process can also be achieved through a Facebook advert.

They are then automatically sent all the information they need to get familiar with your business.

By the time they get on the phone to you, they are already keen on your opportunity.

This makes it a lot easier to convince them to become your latest rep!

This is how you can passively recruit people into your business, every single day. You are just focusing on the key stage here - having the conversation that convert them into reps.

The process up to that point - getting them familiar with your products / service, you as a person and mentor, is all taken care of with your funnel (a system that automates the process).

This is why this is called passive recruiting, (which is also referred to as “attraction marketing”) the whole process is automated and can be done on a mass scale.

Just imagine trying to turn countless cold prospects into warm leads each and every day. It would take hours of your time. By using a passive recruitment strategy, you don’t need to worry!

We now use this strategy in our business and it is generating us leads every day (thank goodness!).

Now it is time for…..

When you are learning new skills and a new way of doing things, it is quite a daunting task without one-to-one help.

It is the same when you start a network marketing business, as you receive guidance and training on how to recruit and sell your product/s.

When we first started to put our business online, we wasted a lot of time and money trying to work out how to do things ourselves.

And it was so unnecessary, because mentorship and guidance isn’t as expensive as you might think.

This is one of our biggest regrets, why did it take us so long to go down the right path!?

3 Step Formula To Grow Your Network Marketing Business on Facebook

If you’re tired of prospecting friends and family, doing home meetings, cold calling, chasing after everyone you meet...

Then you’re probably ready to start building your network marketing business online.

More specifically, you are probably ready to start using Facebook to grow your business online.


You may already use Facebook to promote your opportunity (and your products), which is great, you are already doing something a lot of Network Marketers don't do!

BUT.........

If you are starting to run out of Facebook friends to have conversations with, are fed up of messaging random people in the hope they will connect with you, or have a rapidly shrinking warm market (with a lack of time to keep growing it!) then it is worth considering using Facebook in a different way.

Imagine being able to use Facebook to generate warm leads daily which are interested in your opportunity by the time you get onto the phone with them. 

Would it be useful to be able to have the same conversation with 1,000s of people instead of having the same conversation one-on-one over and over again?

Imagine having a rapidly growing warm market instead of a warm market which gets that little bit smaller each and every day.

It is now just under 6 months since my husband and I left our jobs and took the plunge into working full time on our home business. Scary!

Since we had our children (2 boys - a 3 year old and an 8 month old baby) our perspectives on work have changed a lot and so have our priorities.  

If you are lucky enough to find a job that you love, are passionate about and enjoy spending your time doing - then that is brilliant, well done to you for finding it!

But if your priorities lie elsewhere, then this can lead to a life of unhappiness and resentment.

Before we handed in our notice, we both had to spend 3 hours a day commuting to jobs that were ruling our lives - they paid the bills, but that was about it! 

This made us re-evaluate what was important to us. 

And spending time with our children and seeing them grow up was always going to come first!

We wanted to spend time and have fun with them (like we did on an educational trip to Dinosaur Land below!)

We had originally set up our network marketing company as a side business to try and make extra money whilst working in our jobs (mainly to pay for our huge childcare costs!). 

Recruiting people was always a slow and time intensive experience, and we never liked trying to recruit family and friends because it just didn't feel right.

When we spent time with these people, we didn't want them to be sitting there thinking:

'I wonder when they are going to try and sell me their opportunity?'

We wanted them to spend time with us to relax and have fun, not to worry about us trying to recruit them!

Unfortunately at that time, we just weren't getting enough warm leads or having enough conversations about our opportunity. 

We wanted to scale our business to a level where we could both work on it full time, but in order to do this we needed to find a way of recruiting people at a much faster rate and we needed a much bigger warm market.

We always found the process of taking people from a cold market to a warm market a real nightmare.

We would spend hours trying to build a relationship with a prospect with no real guarantee they would actually join. 

There are only so many hours in a day, and if we had to go through this process for every cold market prospect we had, our business was never going to reach the level we wanted it to.

So a change of approach was needed, clearly what we were doing up to that point wasn't working, but what we didn't realize at that time was that we were already using the solution to our problems.........We were just using it in the wrong way. 

More details........

At that point in time we were using strategies on Facebook to try and grow our business. There are over 2 billion users on Facebook (June 2017), so it is the perfect platform to create meaningful connections for you and your business. 

But after wasting countless hours on ineffective strategies, we have learnt what works on Facebook and what doesn't.

And hopefully these lessons will help you in your business!

If you are thinking of using Facebook to recruit people into your network marketing business (or are currently doing so), then it is hugely important to go about it in the right way.

We have learnt the hard way what works and what doesn’t!

So let's start with what we have found is the wrong way.

This is how we used to try and recruit people on Facebook.

  • close
    We promoted our network marketing product and business opportunity on our Personal Facebook Page using images and videos.
  • close
    We promoted home parties (and webinars), inviting the same family and friends to attend on a regular basis.
  • close
    We sent friend requests/messages to complete strangers (which most people ignored by the way!) in the hope that they would see our personal posts promoting our opportunity and would want to join. 
  • close
    We spammed Facebook groups with copy and paste messages about our products and opportunity

Any of this sound familiar?

Maybe you are familiar with one or two of these strategies and have used them yourself, but these are the actions we took each and every day (late at night after work and after the kids had gone to bed) to try and generate some interest and awareness of our products and network marketing opportunity.

Now we don't want to say that you can't generate any success using these strategies.

We would make a few connections and have a couple of conversations around our opportunity from them. When first starting out with a completely fresh warm market, contacting friends and family isn't a bad place to start. 

BUT.....we knew deep down they were never going to help us grow our business to the level we wanted.

And these actions took hours of our time as they were sooooo manual! 

They just didn’t represent good enough results for the amount of time that went into completing them each and every day, over and over again.

When you are limited in the amount of time you have available to grow your business each day, you need to know that every task you complete is going to have a big impact!

Plus these strategies just didn’t feel very professional and did not portray the message we wanted to give out about our network marketing opportunity or about us as business owners.

Time for a Re-think

So we had to re-think what we were doing. We knew Facebook presented a great opportunity to grow our business (as we had read about how network marketers were using it as part of their strategy to 6 or 7 figures), we were just not using it in the right way for our business.

So what do you do when you get stuck? Copy people that are generating the success you want to emulate!

We stumbled upon a FREE Network Marketing Recruitment Course which taught us how to use Facebook in a different way to recruit people into our business.

This guide taught us how to automate recruitment into our opportunity, by showing us how to add value to our target market and how to brand ourselves.

The concept is called Attraction Marketing, and it helped us ‘flip’ things around so that people approached us about our business instead of the other way around!

So here are the 3 simple steps that we took to change the way we recruited people into our business using Facebook.

Step 1. We set up our own Fan Page

We felt we needed to come across as professional business owners (not many businesses promote their services through a personal Facebook page!).

And we wanted to gain as many followers as possible (everyone is limited to 5,000 friends on a personal profile page, but there is no limit to the number of followers you can have on a fan page).

We also wanted people to get to know and trust us so that we could be seen as individuals that added value to their lives in a specific area (Network Marketing).

So, on this Facebook Fan page we currently post information, videos (including Facebook Live training) and articles that help our target market so that we can be seen as authority figures in our niche.

Posts can including anything from managing your downline effectively, recruiting on LinkedIn to upselling additional products/services to existing customers.

We look at the problems our target market has, research solutions, and then present them on our page!

The majority of  people use the internet for 2 things - entertainment and finding out information (often to problems!).

This has helped us build a relationship with countless 'potential' reps for our business (moving people from a cold market to a warm market), and they will value and trust us as we are providing them with valuable information!

Using a Facebook Fan page for us is great because we can use it specifically for helping people in our niche.

And this can be done on a mass scale.

One conversation, reaches a huge amount of people!

By using a Fan page instead of a personal page, we are also not alienating any of our friends by posting things which are likely not going to be of interest to them. 

We did have some business contacts as friends on our personal pages, but this didn't matter because we just invited them (through Facebook) to like and follow our Facebook Fan page after it had been set up!

Step 2. We Gained a following for our Fan Page

We started by inviting our network marketing colleagues to like our page and then asked them to invite their friends etc.

We did want to continuously grow our page and there came a point where we needed to invest in some Facebook advertising to accelerate the process.

This is not as scary as it sounds!

It takes a little bit of practice to get used to but we were able to focus on our exact target market with the fantastic Facebook Advertising Service.


You have to have a business page (fan page) to use this service.

For example, we can target individuals that have an interest in network marketing leaders such as Eric Worre or Ray Higdon, who are between the ages of 25-45, that live in the USA or UK.

And remember, once  people 'Like' your page you can have an ongoing conversation with them (and everyone else that 'likes' your page) which starts the process of turning them into warm leads!

Here is one of our Page Like Secrets!

We have never told anyone about this tactic before but we want to help you get started! 

This little secret is a really good way of getting cost effective Facebook Page likes!

First of all, create an attractive page post which has an inspirational quote (you can do this on a free design tool called Canva - like the example below) and then you can ‘boost’ it to a wider audience (for example, you can ‘boost’ the post so that it only targets people using the demographic info above).

You will find that a lot of people share these kind of posts and everyone that likes your post, can be invited to like your page!


Just click on the ‘like’ icon underneath, and you will see the option to invite these people to like your page!

Step 3 - Create Long Lasting Relationships

As well as building a fan page following which we communicate with on a daily basis (aim for at least 1 post a day for starters), we aim to drive traffic to our website / blog.

Ultimately, we try to collect the email addresses of our fans so that we can communicate and add value to them over email as well.

Communicating over 2 channels (social media and email) increases the trust levels between you and your prospects as long as you are adding value to their lives!

We can continue to strengthen our relationship with our prospects which can lead to conversations about our products and opportunity. 

We can also potentially offer them products/services which help solve their problems (which we could make a commission on) but this depends on our overall strategy, as often we are just looking to build a good relationship with our prospects to instigate a conversation about our opportunity. 

It's about taking people from a cold market to a warm market on a mass scale by using the power of the internet!
